Born in Johannesburg, Gideon Mendel began working as a photographer in 1983 and has since become one of the world's leading contemporary photojournalists. His latest exhibition and book, ‘A Broken Landscape’, tells the story of how the AIDS epidemic which is ravaging Africa affects individuals, families and communities on a human level through this powerful series of photographs and accompanying personal testimonies from his subjects.

Mendel was recognised as a key photographer of change and conflict in South Africa in the lead up to Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. His first work on AIDS in Africa was commissioned by the Positive Lives action group and this subject has become a principle concern in his work over the past seven years, during which time he has received numerous photography awards.

The exhibition is organised by Network Photographers in association with ActionAid.
