Maria Ahmed | Slips & Burns
Photofusion presents the first solo exhibition by artist Maria Ahmed. Slips & Burns is the latest body of work by Ahmed and reflects her unique style of curating and obscuring photographs from their original form.
Slips & burns is an experimental archive of memories of a country left behind.
Using imagery from picture books about her mother’s native Finland, found materials and family photographs, the artist explores the photograph as an unreliable surface on which memories slip and burn.
Images are subjected to physical and digital manipulation, mixing and masking, raising questions about the malleable nature of the archival image and the role of projection and fantasy in encountering images from the past.
Maria Ahmed uses collage to investigate historic and contemporary languages of photography, drawing on her ever-growing collection of digital and printed matter. Her work has been shortlisted for Belfast Photo Festival, Fotografia Europea + Skinnerboox award, Fiebre dummy award and Images Vevey book award and she was given Photofusion’s Graduate Prize and Select Award. This is her first solo exhibition.
Curated by Katy Barron.
