Pinhole Photography with Katrina Stamatopoulos - Saturday 5 & 12 July

£220.00

Dates: 5 & 12 July 2025

Days: Saturday

Time: 11:00 - 17:00

Length: 2 Days

Tutor: Katrina Stamatopoulos

Join artist Katrina Stamatopoulos for a hands-on two-day course focusing on the creative process of pinhole photography.

A pinhole camera consists of a light-tight box with a small aperture, allowing light to project an image onto the photosensitive material inside. The size and visual outcome of the image depends on the pinholes size, the distance between the pinhole and the subject, and the structure/ depth of the box. By working with the physicality of the camera, you'll gain a clearer understanding of how images are made, and how vision can be manipulated.

Katrina will guide you through the process of constructing your own pinhole camera using recycled materials, as well as testing exposure and exploring the possibilities of your camera, materials and its functionality. Feedback amongst the peer group and with Katrina will be integrated into the course, along with a discussion in how to work with the pinhole negatives and interpret them through hand printing and digitisation.

Inspired by Katrina’s own projects, Shelflifes and Undercover, where everyday materials were turned into cameras and used in public spaces, this course offers a practical and engaging way to explore the fundamentals of analogue photography. You'll not only connect more deeply with the process itself, but also understand its place in the history of photography and its relevance to contemporary practitioners.

Day 1: Saturday 5 July

  • Introduction to Pinhole Photography: Katrina will give an overview of the history of pinhole photography, covering topics such as camera obscura and early photographic processes, as well as contemporary pinhole practitioners.

  • Making Your Pinhole Camera: Guided by Katrina, you’ll construct your own pinhole camera using recycled materials.

  • Loading the Camera & Testing Exposure: Learn how to load your camera with black-and-white paper and make test exposures.

  • Take Your Camera Home: You’ll leave the session with a fully loaded and functional camera, ready to take exposures during the week leading up to Day 2.

Day 2: Saturday 12 July

  • Developing Your Images: Process the pinhole images you’ve captured during the week through a chemical process in the darkroom.

  • Orthographic Film Loading & Off-Site Exposure: Load your camera with orthographic film and head out for a local walk (approx. 2 hours) to make exposures in a new setting, followed by film development in the darkroom.

  • Contact Printing: Learn how to create positive images from your paper negatives and orthographic film using contact printing.

  • Group Discussion & Peer Feedback: An informal wrap-up to discuss the work created and possibilities of where to take it next.

This course offers a unique opportunity to gain practical support and professional advice to better understand the fundamentals and possibilities of the humble pinhole camera!
