Ela Skorska

Hello, my name is Ela Skorska @ela.skorska. I am a recent recipient of the Photofusion Award which I received for my project CONGRUENCE exhibited in my graduation show in June 2024.

I am an analogue photographer and multi-disciplinary visual artist. My practice also incorporates sculpture, painting, and Super 8.

After spending a few years hitchhiking around Europe and living between France and England I settled in the UK.

I attended a photography course at Manchester School of Art and as a part of an Exchange Programme I studied Fine Arts for a year at UCLM in Cuenca, Spain, which resulted in formulating a versatile practice as a consequence of developing a passion for Fine Arts, film art and experimental cinema.

My work investigates the interplay of light and shadow, focused on abstraction and geometrical shapes created by collaborating with chance.

The City, with its structures, plays a significant role in my work, delivering me an ever-inspiring playground for exploration and creativity expressed through my brutalist perspective rooted in my upbringing in Poland.

In my introduction, I would like to share with you some of the images that portray my practice, as well as paintings and a Super 8 film I shot in Spain.

In my latest project (2023 - ongoing) I have been exploring the existence of my light and shadow-inspired analogue photography in the modern world.

Contemplating the longevity of my images being 'stuck' in the constraints of the frame I proceed to liberate it through interdisciplinary methods ranging from Fine Art processes like painting and sculpture to 3D modelling and printing, and working with concrete.

This project, activated by the sculptural properties of my brutalism-inspired images, analyses a photograph as a 3D object and its potential to exist as one.

Through developing knowledge of Sculpture and exploration of materials, I want to expand my concept of photography as an object/sculpture, taking on various forms, some as interactive art, to reach the audience who can't experience art in the usual ways and allow the viewer not just to be an observer but to be an active creator/contributor (as achieved with Perspex sculpture in Congruence project).

I would like to share a few images from my collection of POTENTIAL SCULPTURES, photographs that will form the basis for my future sculpting endeavors.
